Forest Canoe Club – Coaching Introduction

The Team

We would like to introduce our coaching team to all our members. If you have any questions, or any coaching needs, please do speak to any of the team who will be happy to help.

Steve West – Head Coach

Steve is a Level 2 kayak coach, and has been paddling for about 6 years. He has attended the Whitewater Safety and Rescue course. His main paddling interests are freestyle and whitewater river-running. He spends a lot of time at the Thames weirs, tries to get away to Dartmoor and North Wales as often as he can, and observes an annual pilgrimage to the Alps every summer.

Chris Davis

Chris is a very experienced Level 2 kayak and open canoe coach, and has been paddling for 25 years. He has attended the Whitewater Safety and Rescue course. He has been a member of FCC since soon after its formation in 1986, and has been a coach for the last 18 years. Chris likes to run rivers, both whitewater and flat, and has extensive knowledge of our local rivers. He has paddled in many areas across the UK, as well as trips to the Alps.

Andy Fenney

Andy has been a member of FCC for nearly 20 years and is a Level 2 kayak coach. He has attended the Whitewater Safety and Rescue course. Andy likes to paddle rivers, especially whitewater and loves the club Alps trips. He is also a Scout approved kayak instructor, and runs a Cub pack. Andy’s motto is: “Go with the flow.”

Jim McPherson

Jim qualified as a BCU UKCC Level 1 coach at the beginning of 2009 and spends most of his time coaching our younger paddlers in the club. He particularly enjoys paddling the Thames Weirs and travelling further afield to some of our white water rivers such as The Dart and The Tryweryn, either being coached by others or coaching less experienced members of the club. In 2009 he went paddling in The Alps for the first time and had a great week, progressing his paddling even further. Jim also enjoys surfing when the conditions are right.

Adam Harding

Adam is a UKCC Level 1 coach, gaining qualification at the end of last year. He is an experienced paddler, having started kayaking when he was 3. Adam has extensive experience of paddling in the UK, and has also been on a number of trips to the French Alps. He has worked with the club’s younger members over the last two summers, and is now the lead coach for all things Paddlepower.

Ben West

Ben is a Level 2 kayak coach, and has been paddling for about 6 years. He has attended the Whitewater Safety and Rescue course. Ben loves whitewater river-running, and he spends a lot of time freestyle paddling, either on the Thames weirs or at HPP in Nottingham where he is at University. Ben has been a member of the GB Freestyle team, and competed in last year’s World Championships in Switzerland. He has paddled in many places in the UK, the Alps, and as far afield as Uganda and Canada.

Our Goal

Our goal is to help our Club members to develop their paddling skills in a safe and enjoyable environment. We want to encourage people to try different disciplines within the sport, such that everyone has the opportunity to find those aspects of the sport that best suits their aptitudes and aspirations.

Our Objectives

We will work towards our goal by doing the following:

  1. Provide coaching to help our members attain formal qualifications, eg Paddlepower and 2 Star
  2. Provide bespoke courses to help our members become self-sufficient in their paddling, eg Basic Water Safety
  3. Organise varied trips to broaden our members experience and develop personal skills
  4. Provide informal coaching as required to help with skills development
  5. Encourage and help those club members that want to, to become qualified coaches.

Provision of Training for Club Members

Our plans for 2012 are as follows:

  • Paddlepower – assess our young members to establish where their skills place them within the Paddlepower scheme, and develop an individual plan for each young person with a target achievement for the summer lake sessions
  • Run a 2 Star course for adult and older children
  • Run a Basic Water Safety course to ensure adult members are equipped to safely organise their own local trips
  • Coaching of specific skills and techniques outside of the above, eg rolling, basic freestyle.
